Rob Symeonn "Cold Outside" (Red Bud) ****
With another Ticklah (Dub Side of the Moon, Roots Combination, Antibalas) production, the first being "The Chosen One" on this same label, Rob Symeonn's latest "Cold Outside" single must have been inspired by his familiarity with the Brooklyn, New York lifestyle during those cold winter months. Drink up this nourishment of roots, herbs and when the bass line kicks in, digest the conscious message Rob seasoned to warm you up with faith in the Almighty. (www.redbudrecords.com)

OVERTONE - GIVE IT AGAIN REDBUD/US/12
"All progressive ragga souljahs step to this - Brooklyn's Redbud takes a gritty tech-dub ting (think Stereotyp or The Bug) from Lithuania's Overtone down to Nostrand Ave. In the process, Germany's DITD (Inverse Cinematics) hijacks the convoy and breaks the beat into a dancefloor killer that should have 'em juxin' n' jamming at London's Co-Op club."

Overtone, Give It Again - Redbud
---2 1/2 stars out of 3---
An array of mind-boggling keyboard sounds are laid out before us on this experimental electronic jazz performance. 'Dublicate Dub It Again Mix' does exactly what it says on the packaging, offering up an electronic Jamaican dub track, tailor-made for smokers 'n' tokers. The 'Inverse Cinematics Mix' on the other hand could be busted under the Trades Description Act. There is nothing Cinematic about this mix, it's just a firing beats 'n' fuzzy keyboard clash that twists and turns constantly. The IC beats is a stripped-down version of the last mix, highlighting the great beats. The Original could be mistaken for a Dutch techno track played at 33rpm instead of 45 rpm with its slurred hoovering sounds. The 'Dither Down Mix' is a sloppy and lame groove, which is a very poor cousin to the infinitely phatter 'IC Beats'.

Overtone, Give It Again - Redbud
New York 's Redbud imprint offering up an excellent record here! Ragga vocal stylings of MC Second Man are taken in many enjoyable directions, most notably by Inverse Cinematics, who dishes up a deep and dirty duo of broken beat mixes. Much respect to Overtone and all involved on this one.

Overtone, Give It Again - Redbud
"Redbud serves up a Raggary Dubbed up meal in the shape of "Give It Again" from Lithuanian Paulius Kilbauskas. The original gets its strength from a vicious grimy bass, which underpins nimble beats and encouraging vocals, whilst the 'Dither Down Mix' is a shaken guitar driven mission. Inverse Cinematics offer a fuzzy bass mix with flailing keys and thrown drums, as the 'Dublicate Dub It Again Mix' inverts the vocals and drags out the beats over a lazy bass"

Crack Magazine
With a cracking snare and speaker-bothering bass line, Inverse Cinematics take this dubbed-out Lithuanian groove and conjole it into a bonafide dancefloor shit-kicker. Expect purveyors of the 'broken sound' to be hammering this one for ages.

Me first time with New York's Redbud records, and on this showing, some promise indeed. The original of 'Give It Again' is a bit too ravey for me, possessing as it does, a somewhat hoovery bassline. The 'Dither Down' version improves things with twisty acid and electro boogie rhythm, but it's Deutsche wunderkinds Inverse Cinematics that get the gold star for their remix, managing yet again to get a real swing to even the toughest of broken tech beats.

STRIKKLY VIKKLY / 33Hz ISSO/RUDE MEAT REDBUD/US/7
Redbud presents a split 7" from ska/dub stalwart Victor Rice and fellow New Yorkers 33Hz that's pure throwback to the heyday of Lee Perry and King Tubby. And with so many architects today trying to push the envelop with regards to what the "next" sound of dub should be, this ode to the roots of Jamaican drum and bass is quite a welcome homage. While both sides are chock full of overdub and samples, Side A's "Isso" by Strikkly Vikkly is a depth charge of echo and reverb with a rolling bassline picking up where Jackie Mittoo's "Drum Song" left off. The B-side colors even more out of the lines with Rice's ominously-chilled dub version of "Rude Meat"; a kaleidoscopic dub trip akin to the sounds of 70's mixmaster the Scientist.

ROB SYMEONN - CHOSEN ONE REDBUD/US/7
Rob Symeonn's "Chosen One" takes you back to Kingston circa 1974;his pure, easy vocals are perfectly suited to the Augustus Pablo-inspiredtrack, and in classic dub fashion, its flipside is beautifully understated.Apeanaut's "Wargames" could've been on the soundtrack for the 1983 film of the same name; its impassioned plea is made for an end to amoralarms.

APEANAUT - WARGAMES REDBUD/US/7
This sounds like the Bee Gees covering "Dirty Mind" era Prince in Dub. Fucking amazing and I can't stop playing it. Don't sleep on "One More Dub" either.

APEANAUT FEVER E.P. REDBUD/US/12
Brooklyn Dubmasters Apeanaut offer their first 12", and it's pure talent. Live bassfrom Ninjaboy, sultry vocals from Diana Blain, and big, thumping beat structures that balance foggy, haunted dub bass and cracking hip-hop snares like a holy mix of UK artists G-corp and Spacer. Gallient.

STRIKKLY VIKKLY / 33Hz ISSO/RUDE MEAT REDBUD/US/7
...Do check New York's Redbud Label where the mighty keyboardist Tiklah (Victor Axlerod) appears under his Strikkly Vikkly moniker for some funky-dub business a' la Roy Cousins or Harry Muddie's Meets King Tubby. On the flip, 33Hz reminds me of Scratch Perry's dubs of the Silvertones or Jolly Brothers, upful and right.
